“We were three and working as one. That is, two of us were constantly sleeping.”
(Marx bros.)
Who said that, if you want a thing well done, you have to do it yourself? It’s true, no one tells you to make a large crew, but be aware that, if you are by yourself, sixty hours turn out to be few and six minutes, on the other hand, far too many. “I write the screenplay, you direct, he films, we act, you edit, they award us”: this should be the marathoner’s declension. You’d better look around and recruit some friends, better if experienced, as this year the 20 crews will be chosen on the basis of the participants’ resumes. Don’t forget: the more you are, the lowest the entry fee each of you has to pay!
“Now is the time for drinking, now is the time to beat the earth with unfettered foot.”
(Quinto Orazio Flacco)
This is what you will be allowed to say, dear marathoners, on Saturday night, when the entire job’s done and you are waiting for the 6*60 final party. However, before that, apart from time, you will also have to deal with thematic and stylistic requirements, the restrictions that will guarantee the originality of your short film and will guide the making of it. Don’t be scared, they are not hostile and they don’t bite: as a matter of fact, make friends with them, cuddle them and they might turn into your best alleys. Last year it was sentences, objects and narrative functions: what are we up to, this year? Eh eh eh… you’ll find out only when the Marathon starts, at the envelopes opening…
“A moment's insight is sometimes worth a lifetime's experience.”
(Oliver Wendell Holmes jr.)
Technique, eye, competence… each of these elements is important to have a chance in this unusual competition, but none of them is enough by itself. You might have looked after the Coen brothers’ photography or have spent the last ten years in the cutting room with Scorsese, but the Marathon is simply a different dimension. So, before checking out at 6*60 , you’ll better off putting some flexibility, inspiration, rapidity and, why not, a bit of luck in your trolley. Then take your time, your ideas, the given requirements, mixed them all up together and.. wait until the light leading to the finishing line turns on!
“All the hours wound you, the last one kills”
(Latin proverb)
It’s the key feature of the Marathon and, even before the other crews; it’s the number one enemy to defeat: the time. No matter if, you made a work worth the Academy Award: should you overrun the sixty hours, even by just one second, the clock hands, incorruptible and ruthless referees will condemn you to the “non competing Purgatory”, instead of allowing you into the potential winner empyrean. It happened to more than a group last year: don’t make it happen to you by making the best used of the two and a half days you have.
